Recurring Tasks and Automation in Waypoint

Some tasks happen repeatedly: daily habits, weekly reviews, monthly reports. Instead of creating these tasks over and over, let Waypoint handle them automatically with recurring tasks.

What Are Recurring Tasks?

A recurring task automatically creates its next instance when you complete the current one. Complete your “Weekly Review” task on Friday, and a new one appears for next Friday.

Benefits of Recurring Tasks

  • Never forget routines - They always reappear
  • Build habits - Regular prompts reinforce behavior
  • Reduce cognitive load - No need to remember to create tasks
  • Track consistency - See your completion patterns

Creating a Recurring Task

From a New Task

  1. Create a task normally
  2. Open task details
  3. Choose the “Recurrence” option
  4. Select the recurrence interval
  5. Save

Recurrence Intervals

Waypoint all the recurrence patterns that are offered by modern calendar tools.

IntervalCreates Next Task
DailyTomorrow

MonthlySame date next month
YearlySame date next year

How Intervals Work

When you complete a recurring task:

  1. Current task is marked done
  2. New task is created with updated due date
  3. New task inherits all properties (priority, context, description)

Managing Recurring Tasks

Viewing Recurring Tasks

Recurring tasks display a repeat icon so you can identify them at a glance. The icon indicates this task will regenerate.

Editing Recurring Tasks

When you edit a recurring task:

  • Changes apply to the current instance
  • Future generated tasks will inherit the updated settings

Stopping Recurrence

To stop a recurring task from regenerating:

  1. Open the task
  2. Click the “x” to the right of the text
  3. Save

Rescheduling Next Occurrence

Need to skip ahead or push back? Use the Reschedule feature:

  1. Swipe right on the task
  2. Select “Reschedule”
  3. Choose the option you prefer (Today, Tomorrow, Next Due Date, Custom)

This is useful when:

  • You completed early and want to reset the cycle
  • You need to skip an occurrence
  • The schedule needs adjustment

Building Habits with Recurring Tasks

Recurring tasks are perfect for habit formation. You can even set the task type as a “Habit”

Habit Stacking

Create recurring tasks that chain together:

  • 7:00 AM: Morning meditation (daily)
  • 7:15 AM: Review daily plan (daily)
  • 7:30 AM: Most important task first (daily)

Streak Tracking

While Waypoint doesn’t explicitly track streaks, completing recurring tasks consistently builds your completion history.

Start Small

For new habits, make the recurring task small:

  • Instead of “Exercise 1 hour,” start with “Put on workout clothes”
  • Instead of “Write 1000 words,” start with “Write for 10 minutes”

Recurring Tasks + Other Features

With Context Tags

Add context for filtering:

  • morning-routine for AM tasks
  • work-admin for administrative recurring work
  • health for wellness recurring tasks

With Duration

Add estimated time to recurring tasks:

  • Helps plan your day
  • Timer suggestions become available
  • Track if routine tasks take longer than expected

With the Waypoint Assistant

Ask the Assistant to help set up recurring tasks:

“Create a weekly review task for every Friday”

The Assitant creates it with the appropriate recurrence settings.
